Garden benches for relaxation

Wooden garden benchNothing more clearly establishes your garden as a place to linger and enjoy the view than a garden bench.

A bench welcomes passersby to stop, relax and take note of the loving toil spent creating your personal landscape. Garden benches do not come with magazine racks, cell phone chargers or power sources for tablets. They’re a throwback to a gentler time, a simple structure that says: slow down, sit one out, and simply observe for a while.

Placing your garden bench thoughtfully means finding a pleasant, peaceful, private view. After a long day at work, you want to sit on a bench without interruption and enjoy a conversation with a loved one, sipping your favorite beverage, and admiring your garden.

A bench works best in a cozy spot—a deep place where your garden will surround you. The view from the bench may extend 15 feet or 15 acres. What’s important is that the placement gives you the peace and solace you desire.

While a bench is a perfect fit for a garden, it also serves a useful purpose in a home. At the foot of a bed, an entryway, in front of a window or by a fireplace, a bench will always welcome you into its embrace, providing comfort and rest.

At World Rustic Imports, we offer a large selection of high quality wood benches that will last a lifetime. Visit our showroom at 3935 West Reno in Oklahoma City, Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 12pm to 6pm.

Home is where the bar is

Half-circle bar tableWhen you’re sharing a drink with friends, would you prefer to make a trek out to the local bar, pay for overcharged drinks, and get everyone safely home—or entertain from the comfort of your own home?

Post-World War II veterans, who returned home after defeating the Nazis, married, moved to cheap homes in the suburbs and promptly set up bars in their houses. Perhaps inspired by the speakeasies of old, this generation ushered in an era of social drinking the likes of which hadn’t been seen since ancient Greece.

This convenient in-house feature spared homeowners the hassle of driving and allowed them to entertain on the cheap so they could refill their martini glasses with greater frequency. Discounting the costs to their livers and lungs, these smoke and booze-filled basement soirees were one of the finest aspects of home ownership.

Home wet bars have grown in popularity, but often only among the finest liquor connoisseurs and most frequent entertainers. Most people keep bottles of wine in a liquor cabinet or in one of the kitchen cupboards. Some have a wine rack placed at the side of their kitchen island, while others may just put it on top of a buffet.

Fixing drinks can be a nuisance with this setup; requiring you to get the liquor from one location, heading to the refrigerator for lime and ice, collecting olives and nuts or chips from the pantry and finally selecting appropriate glassware from a final location. All of this hassle takes time away from enjoying a drink with your friends or kicking up your feet after a long day.

With a home bar, like the one shown here, you can socialize in one spot while preparing drinks for you and your friends. You can entertain around the bar and enjoy beverages with your friends all night.

You no longer need to run all over the kitchen to get everything you need just to make a drink. It gives you more time to enjoy your conversation, creates a natural social gathering spot, and is convenient for drink preparation.

If you’re interested in the home wet bar shown here, come visit our showroom at
3935 West Reno in Oklahoma City, Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 12pm to 6pm.

This poker table will give you a full house

But, without the space for a poker table in the house, that dream is often quickly dashed away. What if you could hide your poker table under an unassuming table top used for weeknight family dinners?

New on our showroom floor is a dual purpose dining and poker table. Leave it as a table all week long for dining and family activities, but remove the top on poker night. It features a soft felt top which makes it easier to shuffle and pick up cards and chips.

When upgrading your family table to a poker/dining table combo, you may also want to look into upgrading your dining chairs. At a minimum, you’ll want six matching chairs with a seventh nearby, as the ideal poker outing should have at least six and preferably seven players.

Poker chairs are strictly based on personal taste, but make sure the seats are comfortable, as your poker outings can typically run three to five hours or more in length. Padded chairs should be strongly considered since you and your opponents will be seated throughout the evening. Shaker or Mission Amish furniture?

Woman shruggingWhile all Amish furniture is handcrafted and made of real wood, not all Amish furniture styles are the same. Both shaker and mission style pieces fit into the Amish culture of simple, beautiful and functional pieces, but they offer different attributes that make them unique.

Shaker furniture can be identified by its round wooden knobs, tapered legs and subtle curves. Shaker uses wood, rather than glass or metal, as their primary material for knobs and handles throughout each piece of furniture. This not only helps keep the furniture simple, but means shakers could use one supply source to complete the piece.

Mission style furniture, on the other hand, uses sturdy slats, stable legs and straight angles. Mission hardware is also distinct from that of shaker because it is often black, metal or features diamond knobs. Mission furniture often features a darker wood stain and ornamentation, but still calls for simplicity.

When considering both options, shaker furniture works well for people who appreciate simple, clean lines and furniture that has a rustic, country feel to it. Mission furniture is for those who are a little bolder, but who still find a simple look appealing.

Both styles share the same traits of durability, functionality, simplicity and are made from natural elements. They use high end materials and quality woods, which factor into the higher cost of Amish furniture. Amish furniture makers make each piece by hand and spend years developing their skills. Many don’t use any electricity at all, so in most cases each piece of wood is cut, assembled and sanded to perfection by hand.

No matter which style is right for you, World Rustic sells a variety of Amish furniture including high quality dining room tables. Visit our showroom at 3935 West Reno in Oklahoma City, Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 12pm to 6pm.

Exposing Amish knock-offs

Screw in fake Amish furnitureAmish furniture has been popular for years. As a result, that means there’s a market for Amish knock-offs as well!

In its simplest terms, real Amish furniture is made by Amish craftsmen. This means that any piece or style could technically be “Amish.” However, the Amish use traditional methods of construction while craftsmen usually focus on a single style. In many cases a craftsman will specialize in certain pieces of furniture, often continuing the specialization down through the generations of the family.

Discovering the knock-offs

How can you tell if a piece of furniture is really Amish?

Yes, Amish furniture can be copied. So the only way to be sure that what you are buying is an authentic Amish piece is by dealing directly with the craftsman or with a reputable dealer, like World Rustic.

However, there are some tell-tale signs that may be present.

Anything held together by screws is an imitation piece, as they aren’t used in Amish-made furniture. Cheap substitutions such as particle board or veneers are also never used by Amish craftsmen. When looking at a flat piece of wood, the wood grain on the top and bottom of the piece will match if the wood is a solid piece.

If you find wood grain that doesn’t match, you’re most likely looking at wood veneer. It’s a thin layer of more expensive wood that is placed over cheap wood or a plywood or particle board filler. When veneer sheets meet, they create a thin line along the edges that you can see. Solid wood pieces have smooth corners with consistent wood grain on both surfaces meeting at the edge.

Amish craftsmen pay attention to the quality of every step of the process, from wood selection to assuring that the finish is of the highest quality. The thing you get when investing in a piece of real Amish furniture is a piece that will remain beautiful and functional for generations to come.

9 new uses for a buffet

Coffee and cakes on buffet tableOne of the most versatile pieces of furniture you can own is a long, narrow buffet table. This multi-purpose piece of furniture will compliment your decor, provide tabletop space to fill with displays and give you lots of hidden storage. But the best part about a buffet is they are an ideal addition to just about any room in your home.

Here are some new ways to use a buffet in every room of your house.

Entry table: An entry often needs a narrow console table as a landing spot for keys and other knick knacks. Top it with a large mirror, lamp and family photos for extra style.

Coffee bar: Free up kitchen counter space and store your coffee maker, mugs, espresso machine, coffee grounds, k-cups, tea bags, sugars and flavorings on a buffet table.

Kitchen storage: If you have a small kitchen with available wall space nearby, use a buffet for overflow storage and workspace. It could be an island if you finish the back and replace the wooden top with a slab, granite or marble.

Entertainment bar: Put a buffet against an empty wall in your living room to serve as a bar when you entertain. Keep a bucket of ice with drinks, glassware and mixers out in the open for self-serving.

Decorative table: If you have a boring hallway that needs some life, put a buffet against one of the walls, top it with an accent lamp and create a grid of great artwork behind it.

Serving area: Finish off a well-dressed dining room with a buffet table. It makes the perfect server for food, coffee or alcohol when the table is covered with a big centerpiece. It also provides storage for rarely used dishes and a canvas for seasonal decor.

TV stand: Add character to the entertainment area in your living room. Even if you mount your flat screen television on the wall, a buffet will ground it and give you the opportunity to create a decorative vignette so that it’s not all about the TV.

Bathroom vanity: Replace the top with a water and humidity resistant material, cut a hole in the top of the buffet to hold the basin and hide the plumbing in the cabinet below.

Dresser or changing table: Put a buffet in your nursery to use as a changing table and it will grow with your child as they age. From changing table to dresser to first home, the right piece can last a lifetime.

Buffets are usually just the right dimension to fit in any spot in your home. There’s always a long, lonely wall in a home that could use a nice long table. World Imports has a large selection of buffets to choose from. Visit our showroom at 3935 West Reno in Oklahoma City, Monday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 12pm to 6pm.
